“RULES OF COMPETITION”
GENERAL RULES FOR ALL CLASSES
1. Each driver must have one fire extinguisher in their pit area. This rule will be enforced. Starting this year, you may not run without one.
2. All drivers must wear pants and long sleeve shirts. No shorts, no tees or cut-offs.
3. The NUMBER ONE RULE – HAVE FUN! You are the show – respect the audience.
4. Unsportsmanlike conduct or harassment of the judges, officials, or announcer will result in the immediate disqualification of you and your team. You will be escorted off the fairgrounds.
5. All judges decisions are final! Officials have final say at date and time of derby!
6. All rules will be enforced. Follow them or YOU WILL NOT RUN!
7. If you have questions, call before you do or you will be cutting what you added.
8. Cars must pass inspection at the gate, and if needed, will require changes or will not able to run. NO REFUNDS!
9. Judges have the right to bore scope.
10. Cars are subject to re-inspection between heats or before any prize money is handed out.
11. Any controversies will be taken up at the driver’s meeting.
12. No t-bones against blocks. Hit wheels and out – no doors or center.
13. Any vehicle stuck or dead against the concrete wall: all doors become off limits to hits.
14. No holding of opponents or double-teaming. This will not be tolerated.
15. Please remove or disable the air bag systems.
16. All heats will be pre-assigned. Vehicles will be placed in heats according to the amount of entries in their class.
17. All drivers must have helmets. These must be full-faced helmets.
18. Idle only in pit area. No hot rodding. You won’t be warned twice.
19. Absolutely no alcohol in the pit area. Coolers will be checked. If you are caught, you and your team will be escorted off the fairgrounds immediately. Sorry, no refunds.
20. Cars must have roof signs with numbers and numbers on each door. Roof signs no longer than two feet and no higher than a foot.
21. Do not hit driver’s doors. Any deliberate hit on the driver’s door will result in an immediate disqualification. DO NOT “FEED” DRIVER’S DOOR. Judges will have last call on this.
22. All drivers must be fastened by an appropriate seatbelt.
23. Driver’s door reinforcement is required, or YOU WILL NOT RUN.
24. Hoods must be open or removed for inspection.
25. Headers are permitted but they must go straight up only.
26. Radiators may be removed, but not relocated.
27. No patching of rust on the body or frame. Driver’s door rust patch is permitted. If you have questions, call or you will cut.
28. All cars must be stripped of interiors, molding, chrome, glass, extra misc. parts, hitches, roll bars, etc. BEFORE INSPECTION AT THE GATE.
29. All decking in station wagons MUST be removed.
30. All trailer hitches and braces must be removed.
31. Transmission coolers are permitted. Coolers must be bolted or welded to floor panels.
32. No studded tires, wheel weights, trim rings, or hub caps. NO SPLIT RIMS OR WELDING OF RIMMS ALLOWED OTHER THAN VALVE STEM PROTECTORS. DOT tires only.
33. Tires may be doubled, tubed, foamed, or flapped. WE DO NOT WANT FLATS!
34. Windshield bars (roof to dash area) are permitted and are suggested.
35. Batteries must be relocated in the passenger front area and covered. BATTERIES MUST BE RATCHET-STRAPPED DOWN OR VERY SECURELY FASTENED. Bungee straps are not tight enough.
36. Stock gas tanks must be removed, AND NOT USED INSIDE. Boat tanks are suggested. Special tanks for fuel injected motors are suggested. GAS TANKS MUST BE RATCHET-STRAPPED DOWN IN AN “X” PATTERN.
37. No plastic fuel tanks allowed.
38. Fuel tanks must be placed in center of car and bolted to sheet metal only.
39. No fuel tank protectors.
40. Electric fuel pumps must have a shut-off switch.
41. All drivers must attend the driver’s meeting.
42. No sandbagging or holding, or you will be disqualified.
COMPACT CAR WELDED CLASS
A. CAR PREPARATION:
ALL VEHICLES MUST HAVE WORKING BRAKES!!!
B REINFORCING:
Distributor protectors cannot contact dash bar at any time.
1) ABSOLUTELY NO FRAME REINFORCEMENT, STUFFING, FILLING OR PLATE WELDING. Frame seams one (1) pass only – no added metal on frames.
2) ALL FRAMES WILL BE CHECKED BY 2 OR MORE INSPECTORS.
3) No painting or undercoating of frames or sub-frames.
4) Reinforcing will be permitted for drivers safety and for fuel tank protection. (BE REASONABLE)
5) Drivers door must have protection added, or YOU WILL NOT RUN. Bracing across door posts is permitted and encouraged.
6) Rear-ward bracing must end 6” in front of the rear wheels.
7) Compact Cars – 108” or less wheel-base (rear wheel drive) cars up to 110” (front wheel only). IF ANY FRAME REINFORCING IS FOUND, YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. Seam full welding on doors permitted - no more than 3 inch wide by 1/8 inch thick material on doors. NO added metal to frames! Rust repair with same thickness only. DON’T OVERDO, OR YOU WILL CUT IT BACK OUT! Halo bars ok bolted, not welded to frame. No plating welded to frames, except bumper mounts. Either bolted in place or welded. NOT both.
C. HOODS:
1) All hoods must be opened or removed for inspection.
2) All hoods must be 18” inch minimum opening and fire safety.
3) No under-hood bracing permitted.
4) All hoods must be secured by chains or bolts, NO WIRE. Need to open.
5) Bolts are permitted. No more than 4 large bolts (1” max) to secure hood.
6) Bolts from radiator support through the hood are permitted.
D. TRUNKS
1) Trunk inspection holes not needed. You must be able to see through the back seat area.
2) All trunk areas must be clean of all misc. parts, tires, etc.
3) All trunks must be secured using chains, or welding (full seam) or #9 wire up to 4 wraps. #9 wire ok through window opening, max 2 with 4 wraps per opening.
4) Bolts through trunk lid and floor are permitted. Bolts may be welded to the frame (limited to 2 bolts not over 1”).
5) All station wagons: Rear jump seat must be removed and lift panel must be removed.
E. SUSPENSION / STEERING:
1) Can leaf coil cars.
2) No welding of shocks, shackles, or any other movable rear suspension part.
3) Front suspension may be welded up or bolted to meet height requirements.
4) Coil or leaf is permitted. Interchange permitted but must function properly.
5) All leafs may have 9 max leafs.
6) Shackles may be shortened or lengthened.
7) Do not weld leafs together.
8) Coils may be welded in to prevent falling out.
9) Steering may be strengthened.
10) Limiting rear suspension travel with chains permitted.
F. BUMPERS:
1) Bumpers no more than 20” at the top.
2) Bumpers are interchangeable.
3) Bumpers may be weld to mounts or frame.
4) All bumpers shocks may be collapsed and welded.
5) Front and rear bumpers may be chained or welded to prevent dragging.
6) Bumpers may be seam welded.
COMPACT TRUCKS/SUV CLASS
PREPARATIONS:
A. ALL TRUCKS MUST HAVE WORKING BRAKES.
B. Distributor protectors may not connect to dash bar.
C. NO FRAME REINFORCEMENTS.
D. HOODS:
1) Hoods may be welded and rolled for inspection.
2) Weld or bolt.
E. SUSPENSION AND STEERING:
1) Suspension can be switched as long as it functions properly.
2) Front can be welded or bolted up.
3) Do not weld leafs together.
4) Can chain rearends.
F. BUMPERS:
1) May be seam welded.
2) No higher than 24 inches.
3) Bumpers may be welded to shocks or frames.
CHAIN AND GO FULL SIZE CAR
ABSOLUTELY NO ENGINE CRADLES, DISTRIBUTOR PROTECTORS, SLIDER DRIVESHAFTS, REINFORCED REARENDS ALLOWED!! NO WELDING ON SEAMS OR PATCHING OR NO PLATING OF FRAMES ALLOWED!! ALL CHAINS MUST BE NO LONGER THAN 12 INCHES LONG.
Engine swaps ARE allowed and you may weld engine in using up to a piece of 3”x3”x14/” piece of tubing to upper and lower engine mounts.
Rearends MAY be welded (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED).
Cages inside of car are allowed and recommended. You are allowed a dash bar, back seat bar, and bars connecting them together. If you wish to have a roll hoop INSIDE the car, you may have one but NOT CONNECTING to the roof in any way.
Drivers doors MAY be welded solid with a bar across as well, not exceeding 6 inches past the seam of the door on either side.
All doors may have four (4) chains no longer than 12 inches long each. Chains may not go around the frame.
A. HOODS
1) All hoods must be opened or removed for inspection.
2) All hoods must have 18” minimum opening for inspection and fire safety.
3) All hoods may be secured by four (4) chains or four (4) bolts – NOT both – only the front two (2) core support ones may be welded to the frame.
B. TRUNKS
1) All trunk areas must be clean of all misc. parts, tired. etc.
2) All Station Wagons: Rear jump seat must be removed.
3) Trunk may be tucked.
4) You may secure trunk with four (4) chains or two (2) bolts – not both.
5) The bolts may run through the frame but not be welded to the frame.
C. SUSPENSION / STEERING
1) Suspension must remain factory components.
2) ABSOLUTELY NO SUSPENSION CHANGES CAN BE MADE.
3) You may use spring spacers, but you may not weld any suspension part of reinforce any part.
4) Stock tie rod and ball joints only – no reinforcement.
5) No converting suspension to leaf springs if the car didn’t come from the factory with them. Also, no hump plates.
6) You may chain the axle around the humps. EXCEPTION: Front of Non-Chrysler vehicles may use spacers to increase height of front bumper. REMEMBER: NO WELDING!
D. FRAMES
1) No welding at all. Also, no pinning of the frame.
2) No engine cradle swaps.
3) You may cold bend at the crush box only 78 and newer.
E. BUMPERS
1) Bottom of bumper height – no higher than 25” to the top and 21” to the bottom of the bumper.
2) Bumpers are to be of same class (car only). Stock bumpers/shocks MAY BE welded on using NO ADDED STEEL.
3) Front and rear bumpers may be chained or welded to prevent dragging.
4) Bumpers MAY NOT BE FILLED / STUFFED in any way.
5) Seam welding of bumper is OK.
6) Welding of bumper is highly recommended.
F. BODIES – 80’S AND NEWER ONLY
1) Core support only – you can add taller body spacers.
2) Factory body mounts for all other body mounts.
3) If you cold bend, only the front core support may have taller body mounts.
4) May not bolt fenders but you can cut and bend fenders – nothing else.
5) No connecting back of roof to trunk AT ALL.
CHAIN AND GO FULL SIZE TRUCK CLASS
NO PRE-70’S PICKUPS.
NO STRAIGHT FRAMES AND NO STRAIGHT AXLES.
ABSOLUTELY NO ENGINE CRADLES, DISTRIBUTOR PROTECTORS, SLIDER DRIVESHAFTS, REINFORCED REARENDS ALLOWED! no kickers to the frames!!
NO WELDING ON SEAMS OR PATCHING OF FRAMES ALLOWED!
NO PLATING ALLOWED!
Engine swaps ARE allowed and you may weld engine in using up to a piece of 3”x3”x1/4” piece of tubing to upper and lower engine mounts (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED).
Cages inside of truck are allowed and highly recommended. You are allowed a dash bar, back seat bar, and bars connecting them together, basically making a cage. You are also allowed down bars WELDED TO THE FLOOR ONLY – two (2) per side. Drivers doors MAY be welded solid with a bar across as well, not exceeding six (6) inches past the seam of the door on either side. Four (4) chains are allowed per doo – no longer than 12 inches long each.
A. HOODS
1) All hoods must be opened or removed for inspection.
2) All hoods must have an 18” minimum opening for inspection and fire safety.
3) All hoods must be secured by chain or four (4) hood pins. Front two (2) core support ones may be welded to frame.
B. PICKUP BOX AND TAILGATE AREAS
1) All trunk and tailgate areas must be clean of all misc. parts, tires, etc.
2) Four (4) one (1) inch bolts to connect box to cab with 5x5 plates.
3) Four (4) ¾ inch bolts can be added with factory bolts in box to frame.
4) 7-1/2 inch frame height maximum top to bottom.
5) Four (4) chains in tailgate – 12 inches long each.
6) You may have a roll bar behind cab in box but use your four (4) extra bolts wisely. If through the roll bar, they will be counted as extra bolts.
C. BODY
1) Two (2) extra cab bolts can be added to your desired location.
2) Front two (2) core support mounts can be welded.
D. TAILGATES
1) ONLY may be chained or bolted shut in four (4) places maximum.
E. BUMPERS
1) BUMPER HEIGHT – NO HIGHER THAN 31” TO THT ETOP AND 26” TO THE BOTTOMOF BUMPER ON TRUCKS.
2) Bumpers may be welded on. Also, car bumpers may be used. Brackets can be extended 14 inches back.
3) Front and rear bumpers may be chained to prevent dragging.
4) Bumpers MAY NOT BE FILLED / STUFFED / OR ADDED TO in any way!!
5) Seam welding of bumpers is OK.
F. TIRES
1) DOT ONLY.
2) You can stuff, flap, and double them.
3) We do not want flats.
G. ADDITIONAL RULES
1) Batters must be in cab and secured.
2) No bungee straps.
3) Ratchet straps are OK.
4) Tranny coolers are allowed.
5) Gas tanks in pickup boxes only. Must be located right behind the cab.
6) All four (4) wheel drives can only have one (1) drive shaft.

Is this DL as in detroit lakes??? I havent ran in detroit lakes in about 7 years,(water carnival 2005 i think?) rules look far better, than back then.
